Dear God: An Open Letter of Gratitude to God

Dear God,

Today, I just want to say thank You.

Thank You for You. For Your grace, Your love, Your mercy and Your kindness. I don’t know where I would be without You.

Thank You that I am alive and healthy, and that my family is too. Thank You for today, for waking me up this morning and for the simple gift of being counted among the living.

So often, I wake up already thinking about what needs to be done, what needs to change, what I am praying for and what I am still waiting for. But today, I don’t want to start with what I need.

I just want to say thank You.

Dear God,

I think about how far You have brought me, and honestly, I don’t have the words.

I think about the seasons when life was crazy. The moments I was worried, uncertain or simply didn’t know what was going to happen next.

But You kept me.

You held me. You helped me. You held me down in a way no one else could.

Each day, each step of the way, You were there. Even when I couldn’t see what You were doing, You were working. Even when I didn’t know what was ahead, somehow You gave me what I needed to keep going.

And now, looking back, I can see Your hand in places I didn’t recognise at the time.

Dear God,

Thank You for the prayers You answered.

Especially the things I once prayed so desperately for that have now become a normal part of my life.

Sometimes I forget that what feels ordinary today was once something I brought before You again and again. A prayer. A hope. Something I wasn’t even sure would happen.

Thank You for the doors You opened, the opportunities You gave me, the people You brought into my life and the needs You provided for.

But thank You also for the things that didn’t work out.

The closed doors. The changed plans. The disappointments. The prayers that weren’t answered in the way or at the time I wanted.

I didn’t always understand them. Some of them hurt. But looking back, I can see that there were times when what felt like disappointment was actually Your protection or Your redirection.

And for the things I still don’t understand, help me to trust that You know what I don’t.

Dear God,

Thank You for being patient with me.

For loving me through my mistakes, my doubts, my fears and the many times I have tried to carry everything myself.

Thank You for the times I worried about tomorrow as though You hadn’t already taken care of me yesterday.

And thank You that even then, You welcomed me back.

Thank You for forgiveness. Thank You for grace. Thank You that I don’t have to have everything together before I come to You.

Dear God,

Thank You for the ordinary things too.

For food on the table. A place to call home. Family. Friends. Work. Rest. Laughter. A safe journey. A quiet evening. The little moments that don’t always feel significant until you stop and realise what a blessing they are.

Thank You for the things I remember to thank You for, and the many things I don’t.

For the dangers You have protected me from that I will never know about. For the prayers You answered before I even knew I needed to pray them. For the countless ways You care for me that I probably don’t notice.

Please don’t let me become so used to Your blessings that I stop seeing them.

Help me notice.

Dear God,

There is so much more I could say, and so much more I could thank You for. But for today, let these simple words carry everything my heart may not know how to express:

Thank You, God.

For it all.

In Jesus name, Amen.
